Tenshinkai Dojo New Jersey
Authentic Martial Arts Dojo in Bergen County New Jersey

The Dōjō
The dōjō is a place of spiritual and physical cultivation, as well as a home for its students. It is a space where discipline, respect, and self-reflection are practiced through the body. Martial arts are more than their techniques; they are a process of self-realization.
Within the dōjō, students and teachers are connected through a relationship of mutual respect and responsibility. This bond extends beyond any single place or generation, forming a living connection that carries tradition forward across space and time.
Tenshinkai
The Tenshinkai Honbu Dōjō in Köln was founded by Luciano Gabriel Morgenstern, Shinryu Sensei. It is from this dōjō that we take our name and lineage.
The name Tenshinkai (天真会) is composed of the following characters:
天 (Ten) — Heaven
真 (Shin) — Truth
会 (Kai) — Meeting, association
The combination 天真 (Tenshin) carries layered meaning, often translated as naturalness, purity, or that which is true as the heavens. It points toward an unforced, uncontrived state of being—one that is cultivated through sincere and continuous practice.
This name reflects the fundamental principles of classical martial arts: a lifelong path, free from excess, focused on refinement of both technique and character. The work of training does not end at the threshold of the dōjō; it continues in daily life, in conduct, awareness, and responsibility.
Tenshinkai New Jersey
Tenshinkai New Jersey is a study group and dōjō dedicated to the practice of Mugai-ryū Iaido within the Tenshinkai lineage. Our training follows the teachings passed down through Tenshinkai Köln and ultimately to the founder of Mugai-ryū, Tsuji Gettan Sukeshige.
Practice in New Jersey emphasizes:
- correct and deliberate movement
- cultivation of presence and composure
- respect for tradition without rigidity
- and the integration of Zen principles into physical practice
Classes are conducted in a focused, respectful environment suitable for both beginners and experienced martial artists. While rooted in classical form, training is approached as a living discipline—one that demands sincerity, patience, and personal responsibility.
Tenshinkai New Jersey is the first dōjō in the United States dedicated to the practice of Mugai-ryū Meishi-ha, operating within the Tenshinkai lineage and the Mugai Ryū International Federation.
Tenshinkai NJ exists not to recreate the past, but to carry it forward through correct practice, honest effort, and mutual respect among those who train.
